Short I-Search: Should I Spend Money on Hawaii This Winter?
Here I am sitting in my dorm room getting ready to type this paper and I have had this question on my mind for a while. Now I will get the answer I need. It started a little over 2 years ago at my boyfriend’s high school graduation when his grandparents came in town and invited us to come visit them in Hawaii at their condo. I was so excited because I never have been and I would get to spend it with Chad, my boyfriend. My Parents weren’t very happy about it at first but I feel like they have grown to be okay with it since they have become closer to Chad’s parents.
A few winter breaks have come and gone and we just kind of forgot about the Hawaii thing with our busy lives. Then this summer Chad got an internship at his grandfather’s company, ASI. So, I didn’t get to see him much this summer since he was in North Carolina; but I did get to visit 2 times. The two times I did visit his grandparents were really pushing for us to go to Hawaii this winter break since the whales will be there and we could see them.
I just wasn’t sure about the whole money part or this situation. Since my parents don’t have money just to give me to go to Hawaii. I had a job before I left for college but I made enough to save for a sorority and to have some spending money for the summer. Plus I wasn’t real sure if I wanted a job my first semester of college, so I was in a mess about that. Chad figured it would be about $1,000 for the whole trip since we would be staying with his grandparents and wouldn’t have to get a hotel.
I talked to Chad’s mom, Vickie and she feels that it would be a good idea to go because it would be something new and fun for Chad and I to do just as long as we have the money to do so. I also talked to my mom and she feels that it would be fun but doesn’t think I should spend that kind of money right now because I’m in college and I want to be a part of a sorority. She also said that I am young and I will have plenty of time to go to Hawaii just right now isn’t the best time to do so.
My parents had agreed to it as long as I paid for it but then I asked if the money they would spend on me for Christmas presents if they could just give me that money for Hawaii and that could be my Christmas present. They agreed to that too plus my boyfriend said he could help me out a little since his grandparents were going to pay for his flight there and back; so it looked like it was going to happen.
Then I started doing my research about the trip and things to do, car rental, food, flight, and shopping; but I won’t have to pay for a hotel. The cheapest flight I found was on www.cheapoair.com which was $859 per person round-trip. Which I feel is a lot of money and that is just for the flight.
Looking up the car rental and I found that it was $145 per week which would be a total of $290 and I would have to pay $145 to split it with Chad. I found this price was for Thrifty for a compact car.
The food I came to a budget of about $ because we would go to a nice restaurant about 4 time while we are down there since we are staying two weeks. The nice restaurant would be no more than $20 a person which would be a total of $80 plus food for the rest of the week and we could get cheap food so I averaged about $10 a day on food; to a total of $220 for food for the week. I feel that shopping I would need to have about $400 for the two-week period to be able to by things for my family and things for myself and for memorabilia.
Things to do while we are there since we are already to a total of $1,624 im not sure of how much we could do in Hawaii without spending too much more. We would go to the beach and relax, get a tan, play volleyball and such because that will be free. Chad’s grandparents told us that from their condo you could whale-watch from their back porch, so that will be another free thing. Snorkeling is $59.95 with breakfast, lunch and gear included. After doing a lot of research on things that we could do in Hawaii I feel that if I bring a total of $300 for activities and such I will be good. Most of our time I feel will be on the beach because we will just want to try to save money.
My conclusion for the cost of the two-week trip to Hawaii will be $1,824 per person. Now taking in consideration the amount of money I have now, which is about $1,000 and the cost of the sorority, which is $716.50 for the rest of the year, not including t-shirts and other things I may want to get. I have no sort of income whatsoever so the rest of the money I have would be for things for the weekend or when I go out to eat with some friends off campus. My parents will probably spend around $500 on my brother and I each so I will have $500 for Hawaii but that wont even be close to what I need. I have came to the conclusion that going to Hawaii this winter break would not be a good idea since I won’t have enough money for it.
